Benson Maroba Ashiko, will remain in custody for four days as police continue investigations into his alleged publication of a fake funeral announcement for President William Ruto. Ashiko, who was arrested on January 24 in Bungoma, was later transferred to Nairobi and is currently being held at Muthaiga Police Station.
The prosecution informed the court that the fabricated funeral notice, dated January 18, 2025, was widely circulated on X (formerly Twitter), sparking concern among authorities. While the motive behind the post remains unclear, investigators are working to determine whether it was intended to incite public unrest, spread misinformation, or had other underlying objectives.
During his appearance before trial magistrate Susan Ashikwe, the court ordered that Ashiko be detained for four more days to allow the police to finalize their inquiries. If investigations are not completed within this period, he will be granted release on a cash bail of Ksh 30,000 or an alternative bond of Ksh 50,000.
