Blogger Cyprian Nyakundi arrested over a Covid-19 Twitter post

The police are holding blogger Cyprian Nyakundi for allegedly posting on Twitter that a top Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) official travelled abroad and failed to quarantine on his return.

Nyakundi had received summons from the DCI detectives and presented himself at Nairobi’s Central Police Station on Tuesday afternoon. Has been held there since it is, however, unclear what he will be charged with.

Nyakundi is not the first blogger to be arrested for Covid-19 related posts.

Blogger Robert Alai appeared before a court of law on Monday for allegedly publishing false information about the Coronavirus on his social media platform, in contravention of the Computer Misuse and Cybercrimes Act, 2018.  He was released on Sh50,000 cash bail.

Another civilian, 23-year-old Elijah Muthui Kitonyo was arrested in Mwingi for allegedly publishing false information that could result in panic. He had posted that the government was deceiving people regarding the situation in the country.
