4 Filmmakers Arrested in Nairobi in Mysterious Police Operation

Four Kenyan filmmakers Nicholas Wambugu, Brian Adagala, MarkDenver Karubiu, and Chris Wamae have been arrested today at their workplace in Karen Village under unclear circumstances.

According to Activist Boniface Mwangi, the four individuals were picked up by police who also confiscated their equipment and hard drives during the raid. The motive behind the arrest remains unknown, and no official communication has been issued by the authorities regarding the reason for their detention.

One of the filmmakers managed to briefly contact a friend before being taken away. He revealed that the group had been split into two, with Wambugu and Adagala being transported to Pangani Police Station, and Karubiu and Wamae taken to Muthaiga Police Station.

The arrest, which  seconds Maleve‘s arrest earlier this week in a similar manner adds to the growing pattern where digital content creators, independent journalists, and filmmakers are subjected to surveillance, harassment, or arrest for unclear reasons.

Human rights lawyer Eunice Yano has since confirmed the whereabouts of all four filmmakers, and legal support is now being mobilized.
