KQ suspends employee for allegedly sharing a video of Chinese plane arrival on social media

A Kenya Airways employee has been suspended indefinitely for allegedly recording and sharing a video clip on social media, the arrival of a China Southern Airline plane at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) with 239 passengers on board.

In a letter addressed to Mr Gire Ali, Chief human resource Evelyne Munyoki said, “Following a report of video of China Southern flights arrival at JKIA and circulation of the video clip widely on social media and your alleged involvement in the matter, it has been decided that you be suspended from duty with effect from Feb 27.”

Ms Munyoki further claims that the suspension is in line with the company HR policy manual and asked that Gire avail himself to the investigating team during the period of suspension.

“You are therefore required to remain contactable and within reach during the period. Also, note that the suspension period will be on full salary,” she said.

KQ is under pressure to suspend its flights to China due to the widespread of the Corona Virus.

Kenyans took to social media to express their anger over the reckless handling of the issue especially after the Ministry of Health advised the passengers to voluntarily quarantine themselves for 14 days after being cleared at JKIA.

In the wake of this, Kenya Airways released a statement claiming that they had received a letter by the Kenya Airport Authority (KAA) stating that there had been a breach of airside procedures involving a KQ employee.

“As an operator at the JKIA, we are expected to adhere to the airport safety procedures and regulations set by the KAA as the airport regulator and which are prescribed by law,” said the letter.

Mr Gire will, however, remain suspended to allow a full investigation into the matter.
