Blogger Cyprian Nyakundi Faces Jail Term For Contempt of Court Over online Defamation Case

Controversial blogger Cyprian Nyakundi is set to be sentenced for contempt of court for failing to appear to answer to charges related to a post on his Twitter page that is said to have defamed the Interior CS, Fred Matiang’i.

The charge sheet says that on January 23 at an unknown place within the Republic of Kenya, Nyakundi published defamatory information against Matiang’i on his Twitter page. It was linked to an article by The Standard titled ‘Vocal Minister in illicit affair with choir girl’. Nyakundi said the description of the minister in question fit that of Matiang’i.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations officers arrested Nyakundi on Friday 26th. He was later released on a police bond and asked to present himself to court to take a plea.

Nyakundi appeared before Milimani Magistrate Kenneth Cheruiyot where he denied publishing offensive information about Matiang’i on his Twitter account.

He further requested the court to release him on a personal bond on the grounds that he had obtained an anticipatory bail of Sh100,000 on January 30.

He told the court that on January 30, he appeared before Justice Luka Kimaru and obtained an order for anticipatory bail.

The case will be mentioned on February 13 where the blogger is required to attend court in person for confirmation of whether the accused was apprehended to answer to the charges.
