Internet & the Law training workshop for Kenyan lawyers

We will hold two training workshops for lawyers on Internet and the Law to empower them with knowledge to better understand concepts like freedom of expression, digital rights and access to information among others.

The training workshops, to be held in Nairobi and Mombasa, will result in a pool of Advocates who may represent and advise bloggers, journalists and Kenyans online on Freedom of Expression related matters including arrests and representation in court.

The protection and development of Human Rights and Civil Freedoms are crucial in ensuring respect for the rule of law and constitutionalism. Lawyers are at the heart of protection and promotion of human rights.

Freedom of Expression is a fundamental right guaranteed by the Kenyan Constitution and international human rights instruments.

The workshops will target at least 50 Advocates of the High Court.

BAKE has been accredited by the Law Society of Kenya to carry out this training and the participants are also eligible to be awarded One Continuous Professional Development (CPD) point after attending the training.

The first training will held in the month of October from 9th to 13th in Mombasa while the second training will be held in from 27th November to 1st December in Nairobi.

The Mombasa training is open to Advocates practicing in Mombasa, Kilifi, Kwale, Lamu, Tana River and Makueni Counties. The Nairobi training is open to Advocates practicing in all other towns across the country.

The training workshop is supported by the Media Legal in Defense Initiative (MLDI), a United Kingdom based organization, that promotes media freedoms in the world through supporting legal initiatives. MLDI provides legal help for journalists, bloggers and independent media across the world.
