Blogger Cyprian Nyakundi is set to be sentenced for contempt of court in a defamation suit filed by Safaricom’s CEO Bob Collymore and former CEO Michael Joseph. Nyakundi was sued for defaming them for his online posts on Facebook and Twitter accounts and on his blog.

The case came up for mentioning on 19th of January where the sentence was supposed to be made but Justice Lucy Njuguna, of the civil division, postponed it after an application from Collymore’s lawyer. The lawyer Peter Munge filed an affidavit to illustrate that Nyakundi has repeatedly aggravated his disrespect of the court since December, 2016. Nyakundi’s lawyers will also be expected to respond to the additional filing ahead of the sentencing.
The blogger risks jail term or fine or both after he was found in contempt of court in December 2016.
Lady Justice Njuguna found Nyakundi guilty of contempt for canvassing matters before court on social media. He is in court facing a defamation suit filed by Safaricom CEO Bob Collymore which is pending before the same judge.
Nyakundi will be sentenced on January 31 when he is required to attend court in person.
